Well, I have finished my second day/week as the board operator at WFMU. Last week I learned the board and what to do in the studio. This week, I was on my own to fend for myself and I survived. The show I am working on is the Dave Emory show, where it is a pre-recorded show that we put together and air every Tuesday. I sit there and make sure that the show runs smoothly, no glitches in the show or slipped curse words. Then at the end of the show I announce what next weeks show will be along with the station ID and then announce the next show coming up. So this is what i had to do yesterday. I was so nervous. Nervous of the buttons I had to push, worrying that I'd fuck that up somehow, worried about talking too fast and worried that i would mispronounce something. But alas, I was fine. I did fine. heart in throat the entire time, but other than that....I am sure over time, that will be nothing.
It's like any new job. You are nervous at first and want to do well. You take notes, but then looking back at the notes, you think you wrote hieroglyphics. You don't know anyone, become shy to ask questions. I was talking with Daniel from work about the station and I was telling him how i am kinda shy about the whole station. He was surprised to hear that from me. Especially since i am not a shy kind of person. i told him it is more of an idol worship kind of thing.... where I love this station and am just nervous about working with the people I listen to and love their shows.... I know all the DJ's are nice and helpful. it's just that initial meeting. I was fine this week, going in and delivering a CD to the DJ before me, going in the record library and having another DJ there picking out tunes. I know through time of me going there, this will all wear off and I will stop being silly about it.
Well the one cool thing is that Ken, station manager, asked me if I was interested in being a DJ. I was like- Ummmm YEAH. So I am allowed to sign up for time to make a show in the other studio in the building and create a 90 min show..... which of course will be like my Underwater Theme Park. So I will continue to update you all with the progress and you can listen to me live on WFMU every Tuesday night from 6-7 pm.... I will be talking around the 7pm time.
