NYC has Rednecks too

For some reason, lately there has been discussion of rednecks among my friends. Stories of rednecks or how to be one or the stereotypical redneck. And rednecks don't have to be from the South, even though they usually are depicted of that. I see scenes of Deliverance playing in my mind.....

I have been thinking about it and came to the conclusion that NYC has their own type of redneck. Now they may not have the farmers tan where the term originated. But they do have the stereotypical qualities. I call them the NYC lifers. They don't leave the city. EVER. I run across them often and they really are scary. If you don't know they type, let me fill you in.

You will start to talk to them and tell them something like, I just got back from Moscow. They will then laugh at you and say why would you leave NYC?! (in a thick Brooklyn accent) Then proceed to tell you to go to Brighton Beach where you can get the best Russian food. Now, having gone to Moscow, i would have to agree with the NYC lifer, cause Russian food is horrible. HORRIBLE! BUT!! If i didn't leave NYC i would have never seen St. Basil's Cathedral or stood in the middle of Red Square and feel the immense history. It was amazing. I absolutely loved Moscow. I can't get that in NYC.

No matter what you say to these Lifers, they will never understand the wonders of travel. I did take one away from NYC for Thanksgiving once, when i was in college. That was fun. She was born and lived in Flushing Queens her whole life. I don't know what made me do it, but i felt the need to take her home like a stray pet. And she was willing to come on the experiment. We were driving around Massachusetts and she's looking out the window all confused. Then she asks me how i know where i am going. I look at her confused and ask what the hell she is talking about. She said how do you give directions to where you are going? All i need is to know two things, the cross streets and building number. For example, go to the corner of 6th and 14th St. and i know where to go by that alone. So i tell her, you give directions. Go down the street for about 3 miles and take a left at the stop light. Then take an immediate right at the McDonald's..... Amazing.

The other thing that drives me nuts about NYC Lifers is that nothing beats their city so why should they leave. Everyone comes to them so why do they need to leave. They get to learn about all cultures cause NYC is the melting pot, blah blah blah. New Yorkers are the best and why should i ever meet new people from other places who may change my stale boring opinion on myself. I am going to remain the same pig headed self. Wow, do i sound bitter.

So, as you can see, we have our own kind of ignorance here too. I guess that is one of my big pet peeves. Ignorance. I deal with it daily and it's the first thing to make me want to walk away fast. So, to my southern friends that i LOVE so much, I know you aren't all total rednecks.

There are also redneck in upstate NY. Ask JW and and she'll tell you all about Skiing in upstate and a woman named Blue. And as a born and bred New Yorker who now lives in the Midwest, yes that attitude is frustrating.

But I find it more frustrating that the guy with the "Brooklyn"accent who thinks the best Russian food is in Brighton Beach has probably never been to MOMA, the Met or any museum, the UN, the Empire States Building, the Seaport or Statue of liberty, WTC before it went down or even to bloody Central Park.

I think that's worse.
