So my friend i zimbra, sent me an email today to remind me of the Kinetic Sculpture Race that happens in Baltimore every year. I have been fascinated by this race and unfortunately have yet to go see it. For some reason, every year i am busy that weekend. Damn it, this year i am going. I am going to plan. I am going with a notebook and pen with hopes of entering this fun race. The idea is that your sculpture has to move and be able to go over multiple terrains, one being WATER. How cool is that? And if you look at some of the past entries, these people aren't joking around. This stuff is pretty amazing. At least i am amazed.
I had found out about this fun race when my dad moved down to Baltimore. He live in a boat in the inner harbor and had the perfect view of this amazing museum called the American Visionary Art Museum. The museum is covered with mirrors and has a neon sign going across it with the words "O Say Can You See". I had been fascinated by the mere facade of the building and finally had the opportunity to go visit it. The wonderful thing about this place is the fact that the artist shown in here are NOT famous or trained artists. These are people who are addictive, obsessive/compulsive people. The art is fascinating. I love it. It follows my theory that art is not a learned thing and that ANYONE can do it. And the gift shop is the bestest place in the world. I could buy the whole place. But it is owned by the same shop owner that has a place i used to go to in Chicago called Uncle Fun. This is where i used to buy all my sculpture supplies when i went to school out there. They had old Happy Meal toys, rejected patches, old post cards, old dolls and toys. This place ruled. There was supposedly a sister store in Minneapolis as well.
Anyways..... as i regress........ So as I was saying this museum has some past designs from this race and they sponsor it. So I will be going to see what i could make for the following year. Yes, that is what i said. I am totally doing this damn it. I am also looking for volunteers. Who out there in the Baltimore, Delaware, Pennsylvania, DC and the Jersey/New York area that is interested? We need a team. We need ideas. We need people that are mechanically inclined. WE means ME. So let me know if you are IN or OUT. (sorry, too much Project Runway....)
